MANY DEFINITIONS OF 'PROBIOTIC'
"Probiotic" means, literally, “for life.” As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), a probiotic is a living microorganism that, when administered in adequate amounts, confers a health benefit on its host. Essentially, a probiotic is a culture that, if eaten in sufficient quantities, gives health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Anyone can take probiotics simply to maintain and balance of intenstial microflora. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are the most common type of microbus used. LAB have been used in the food industry for many years, because they are able to convert sugars (including lactosa) and other carbohydrates into lactic acid. This not only provides the characteristic sour taste of fermented dairy foods such as yoghurt, but act as a preservative, by lower pH and creating fewer opportunities for spoilage organism to grow. Strains of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, are two principal kinds of probiotic bacteria.
